Members can post details of classes, courses or workshops they are offering here. It's a great way to get the information out to other members and can prove invaluable for new potters and new members to help get their pottery journey started.

Posts with specific dates will be deleted once the course date has passed. if you offer courses on a regular basis, please create a generic post (no dates) with links to your own website where specific details can be found and it will be left on this page for 12 months.

    This short evening class, run by both Fiona and Chris, is suitable for beginners who would like an introductory course in working creatively with clay, and those with a little prior experience who would like to refresh or build upon thier skills. Various approaches and techniques will be demonstrated, and you can then make pieces of your own design. For those who have been on a course before, you may choose to focus more on one or two areas.

    It will include handbuilding, pressmoulded dishes and handmade tiles, wheelthrowing, surface decoration- applying colour, texture and pattern and glazing. Each weekly session is from 6 - 8.30pm on Tuesdays. New processes are covered each week, and you will learn about handling the clay at different stages.

  • Ceramics: Thursday morning course Posted on by Fiona Thompson

    This five week course, run by Fiona, is suitable for beginners as an introduction to working creatively with clay, and also for those who would like a refresher. It will run each Thursday morning from 10.30 til 1.30 for five weeks. If you've been on a course before you are welcome to join the course to explore and develop your skills and ideas in more depth, and to choose to focus more on one area as appropriate. We will cover different approaches to handbuilding including the traditional method of coil building, make press moulded dishes/tiles, and throw on the wheel. A variety of ways of creating surface decoration (using slips and glazes) will be covered; exploring texture, pattern, colour and markmaking at different stages. Each technique will be demonstrated at the start, and you will be able to work on projects of your own design.

  • Studio membership in Edinburgh Posted on by Fiona Thompson

    At Cyan Clayworks in Edinburgh we are now offering a new service- monthly membership for keen amateur makers. 

    This is £60 per month per person, paid in advance by direct debit.

    For this you get the following: up to 20 hours of studio hire per month, access to tools and equipment, firings, and basic materials- stoneware, earthenware, slips and glaze. Temporary storage space will be available for work in progress. Also included: occasional technical support and advice, your clay recycled for you, and a discount on tuition and scheduled courses. The studio hire slots will be scheduled at differing times/days Tuesday to Saturday, but with 2-3 available slots each week on average.

  • Ceramics courses, one off workshops, tuition and studio hire Posted on by Fiona Thompson

    Cyan Clayworks is a not-for-profit studio in Edinburgh, run by Fiona Thompson and Chris Donnelly. They both have been making work professionally since the mid 1990s and set up the studio in 2012. 

    Fiona and Chris make their own work as well as offering a wide range of learning options for adults at all levels of experience. (Please note, as it is a working studio and open plan with a wide range of the usual machinery/equipment/raw materials, we are not able to accomodate children or those with specialist needs). 

    You can choose from:

    Scheduled courses: evening classes, one off tasters, one day workshops and weekday courses. Beginners to intermediate. Small class sizes, often with both Fiona and Chris running a course. 

    Individual tuition:  for those who want more focused time at all levels from complete beginner to experienced. Throwing, handbuilding, surface, glaze tech, mouldmaking/casting. Practical advice on setting up your own studio; everything from recycling your clay to loading and firing kilns. We also work with other artists/designers who have a project in mind. 

    Bespoke workshops: for those who want a one off workshop with friends or family. 

    Studio hire: for keen amateur makers who can work independently/untutored you can hire workspace for three or four hours. Work is fired for you, all materials etc included.

    Small class sizes (max 7 in this class) so lots of hands-on support; all materials and tools are provided; and all work will be fired for you. Your pieces will be glazed in the last session and then ready to collect (after firing) about a week later (smaller tiles pieces ready sooner).

  • 'Ceramics Ti Ci' A week long Masterclass with Andrew Appleby Posted on by Alex Gunn

    Andrew Appleby (one of Scotlands senior potters) is coming to our studios in central Edinburgh to teach a Wheel throwing Masterclass in April.

    The dates are: Monday 8th to Saturday 13th.

    The title of the workshop is 'Ceramics Ti Chi' .

    You will focus on developing wheel throwing skills concentrating on efficiency of time, space and body movement all of which are vital to gaining the muscle memory necessary to create consistency and quality wheel thown pots and vessels.

    Andrew is a very experienced potter and teacher and you will have great fun working with him and learn  lots.

    There is a choice of a morning or an afternoon session Monday to Saturday with a free day on Thursday.

    Morning sessions are 9.00pm till 12.30pm
    Afternoon sessions are 2.00pm till 5.30pm

    The cost for the week  is £210 with materials and firing costs included. 

    This course is suitable for all levels including beginners with some experience.

    This four week course will run on Saturdays from 10.30-2.30. It will be run by both Fiona and Chris, and is aimed mainly at those with a little prior experience who'd like to develop their skills. You are also welcome to join us as a complete beginner. Fiona specialises in handbuilding and the surface, and Chris mainly focuses on thrown tableware and low tech print techniques. Cyan Clayworks is a non-profit space and working ceramic studio.

    As an underlying structure, we will cover a range of creative ceramic techniques. As each session is four hours, it will allow us to go into more detail as and when relevant. The course will include wheel throwing, coil building, slab building, and the surface - including slip application, basic printing, stencilling and glazing. It will include planning forms and surface, learning about the different stages of working with clay, and developing your own unique pieces.
