  • Wild Clay Weekend with Philip Revell Posted on by Tom Nolan

18th - 19th Aug. Wild Clay course with Philip Revell hosted by Pishwanton Craft Workhops, Pishwanton Wood, East Lothian.

    Time: 10:30 -17:00 both days.

Price: £110, including hot lunches and a campfire meal on the Saturday evening.

This experiential, two-day course will give you an introduction to making hand-built pottery using locally dug clay and to the transformational power of fire.

The first day is all about understanding clay, how it was formed, where to find it in the landscape and how it came to be there. We will dig some clay on site and learn how to make it usable. You will have the chance to make several pots using basic hand-building techniques and to learn how to give them the best chance of surviving the fire.

The second day is all about using fire to transform clay into ceramic. We will use a simple, bonfire firing for a quick and direct experience of the firing process. Whilst the pots are cooling there will be an opportunity to further develop your pot making skills, to learn about clay as a building material and to explore and experience Pishwanton Wood.

Philip Revell is a potter, community activist and independent researcher. He has been working with clay for nearly forty years and is passionate about using craft activities as a means of reconnecting with nature, and with our hands.

    TILE // Saturday 3rd February 2018, 11am - 1.30pm
Starting with TILE, you'll learn how to make 2D tiles and coasters, and how to decorate them using decorating slips and surface decoration techniques, before moving onto 3D creations in PINCH, SLAB, and COIL.

    PINCH // Saturday 10th February 2018, 11am - 1.30pm
Starting with ball of clay, in PINCH you'll learn how to poke and prod and pinch a lump of dirt until, as if by magic, you have something useable. Over the course of the class you'll have plenty of time to make a few small pinch pots which can be used as dipping bowls, for storing jewellery, or even as a tea bowl.

    SLAB // Saturday 17th February, 11am - 1.30pm
Rolling pins at the ready! In SLAB you'll learn how to roll out slabs of clay which we'll then transform from 2D sheets into 3D wonders. Over the course of the class you'll learn how to roll out and cut even slabs of clay, before joining them together to create a pot which can be decorated using coloured slips and surface deoration techniques.

    COIL // Saturday 24th February, 11am - 1.30pm
COIL fully embraces the satisfying repetition of a slightly monotonous task. We'll start by rolling out oodles of noodle shaped coils before stacking them up to create bowls, pots, and mugs. Over the course of the class you'll have plenty of time to make a number of small objects, or focus your attention on making one item.

These classes can be attended as one-off classes or as a block of 4 classes. Each class is £30.00 per week, or £100.00 for a 4 week bundle. This includes all tuition time, materials and firing/post-production costs. After the class your work will be fired and glazed by Steph, ready to collect or be posted out to you in a few weeks time.

Please email hello@stephliddle.com if you'd like to book into all 4 classes for the reduced price.

Have your own ideas? You will develop these. Or bring in a photo of a painting or textile you really like for inspiration. Have fun learning how to make families of objects - through colour, form, texture, or a plinth - be it functional vessels or sculpture inspired by this painting. For those of you new to pottery you will learn core skills -such as slab building, coiling, throwing on the wheel and how to translate 2d into 3d, throwing on the wheel. Decorate your designs with slip, sgraffitto, sponge ware, glaze. Each session will introduce a new technique. Please note that pottery class payment is non-refundable.
