The Scottish Potters Spring Weekend is held annually in early March at Tulliallan Castle, Kincardine, Fife. This is Scotland’s Police College and it provides excellent accommodation for our growing numbers.
The weekend starts late afternoon Friday and has two days of demonstrations from three demonstrators, one handbuilder, one sculptor and one thrower. One of the three is active in Scotland and we often engage an alternative firing expert. The demonstrators develop their work over the two days and attendees can choose to stay watching one demonstrator or move from room to room as they choose.
People can stay the whole weekend, (two nights and two days of demonstrations), or just one night (Saturday, with both demonstration days), or come as a day visitor for one or both days. All meals, towels and bed linen are provided. Tulliallan is well heated and all rooms are en-suite. There are enough rooms for everyone to have a single room for which there is a single supplement but many choose to share with a friend. A very few rooms have a kettle so it is the luck of the draw if you get one of those.
The benefit of arriving on the Friday from 4pm (or earlier from 1.30pm if giving help to set up) is that there is a Meet and Greet at 5.30pm with a glass of wine, welcome and introduction by the Chairperson. After dinner the three demonstrators give a PowerPoint presentation of their work. Sometimes this presentation can help you decide which demonstrator inspires you and with whom you would like to spend most time.
Saturday demonstrations run from 9am to 4.30pm and Sunday starts at 10am to approximately 4pm. Help is always needed to clear up all the rooms.
Our demonstrators for 2020 will be:
- Carina Ciscato
- Lesley McKenzie
- David Wright

An important feature of the weekend is that we hold our Annual General Meeting on the Saturday at 5pm. This is the one time of the year when most SPA members are in one place at one time. The AGM is open to all SPA members, whether you attend the weekend or not. SPA Committee Members are also elected/re-elected at the AGM.
In the Assembly Hall at Tulliallan we have a Members display area where pots are offered for sale or just display. Also in the Assembly Hall we have one or more pottery suppliers selling all kinds of tools and goodies. Our regular is Sedgefield Pottery Supplies. On the stage for the last couple of years, we have had Shannon Tofts taking professional photographs of your pots.
ANN LIGHTWOOD AWARD
We hold a competition each year, sometimes with a theme, sometimes asking you to show your best pot. The demonstrators are the judges for the award and the winner is announced at lunchtime on Sunday. The theme for 2020 is - Your Best Pot.
The raffle is held at the end of the AGM. We ask for donations of either pottery or pottery related items.
A fun aspect of the weekend is taking part in the Mug Swap. If you bring a mug that you’ve made, take a cloakroom ticket, keep one half and put the other into your mug, the ticket is later moved into a different mug and you go home with someone else’s creation. The mug swap is drawn at the end of the AGM.
