Fiona Thompson - Cyan Clayworks

Material:
Earthenware
Technique:
Hand building
Firing:
Electric

I've been making handbuilt objects and vessels for the last 20 years for exhibition and commission. My practice also includes residencies, teaching, community art work, collaborative projects and writing. Recent work explores aspects of tourism and travel, and the natural history collection. I focus on handbuilt one off pieces with layers of printed and painted imagery. These are non functional.

I run the studio Cyan Clayworks, shared with Chris Donnelly, which we established in 2012. As well as making our own work, we run regular courses, one off workshops and offer indivual tuition. There is also project support and workspace/equipment hire available; for professional artists/designers, students and keen amateurs to work on individual projects. The studio is a community interest company.

The studio is open by appointment. To book courses or for more information please see the website or email .

Ceramics: pots for kitchen and table Posted on by Fiona Thompson

14th, 21st and 28th August 6-8.30pm

This three week summer course run by Chris Donnelly will be on Tuesday evenings. It is suitable for adult beginners and those with a little prior experience who would like to develop their skills further. Chris has been making tableware for around 20 years, and will assist you to develop your own unique functional pots.

Each weekly session will be from 6 - 8.30pm, and will take you through the different stages of making and finishing pots for your table and kitchen by hand and on the wheel. Small class sizes.

During the course the first week will focus on two main approaches to making functional forms: wheel throwing, and press moulding using ceramic moulds. You will be able to make forms of your choice, which could include serving bowls and trays, casseroles, jugs, vases and more!

During week two the focus will be on the construction of vessels by slab building. There will be the chance to practice your throwing further, and maybe try new forms. You will also finish your pots from the first week (trimming and refining), and add handles/spouts as appropriate. Slip decoration can be applied to the pots as required.

The last week will focus mainly on glazing your first pieces which will have been fired, and finishing off the pots from week two (these pots will be fired and glazed for you ready to collect a week or two later).

£100 per person, inclusive of materials, preparation and firings. We would recommend bringing some images of pots that you like to have an idea for a starting point. Your pieces will be fired and ready to collect a couple of weeks later.

Ceramics: handbuilding masterclass Posted on by Fiona Thompson

A two part workshop -11th August and 18th August 10-3 each session.

This special two part workshop will run on two consecutive Saturdays, and will focus on a traditional form of handbuilding- coil building. It is suitable for adult beginners and those with prior experience who would like to build on their skills. Fiona is an experienced ceramic artist who has focused on handbuilding vessels for the last 25 years. She will guide you through the processes of planning, constructing, refining and decorating your own unique coil-built pots.

During the first day (Sat 11th aug 10am - 3pm) we will focus on construction of one to three pots each. Fiona will show you how to build your forms, control the profile and minimise technical issues.

Then in the second session (Sat 18th aug 10am - 3pm) we will finish, refine and decorate your pots. These will have dried slightly and will be at an ideal stage to refine the foot, top edge and even out the walls. You will also have the option to add some more more height to one or two of the pieces as apppropriate. We will take a short lunchbreak, so bring a packed lunch. Tea and coffee provided.

Your work will be fired and glazed with a clear glaze ready to collect a few weeks later. You'll be notified by email and will then have a month to collect your pieces.

£135 per person, inclusive of booking fee, materials, preparation, glazing and firings.
