I've been making handbuilt objects and vessels for the last 20 years for exhibition and commission. My practice also includes residencies, teaching, community art work, collaborative projects and writing. Recent work explores aspects of tourism and travel, and the natural history collection. I focus on handbuilt one off pieces with layers of printed and painted imagery. These are non functional.
I run the studio Cyan Clayworks, shared with Chris Donnelly, which we established in 2012. As well as making our own work, we run regular courses, one off workshops and offer indivual tuition. There is also project support and workspace/equipment hire available; for professional artists/designers, students and keen amateurs to work on individual projects. The studio is a community interest company.
The studio is open by appointment. To book courses or for more information please see the website or email .
At Cyan Clayworks in Edinburgh we not only have a range of scheduled courses, we also offer untutored studio access and individual tuition, plus project support for artists/students.
Studio hire is in blocks of two or four hours, on various dates/times (details on the links below), and is booked in advance through eventbrite. This service is aimed at keen amateurs who would like occasional use of the studio; for handbuilding, wheel throwing and decoration. Materials are provided, and some technical support if needed. Firing is done for you but only for work made at the studio. This service is untutored, and you will need to have attended a course/training previously (this doesn’t have to have been with us) and have basic skills with clay as a minimum. If you haven't been to the studio before, please email before booking so we can discuss your requirements and make sure it is the right service for you. firstname.lastname@example.org
At Cyan Clayworks (a working ceramic studio and social enterprise) we run various courses throughout the year. This seven week course run by Fiona will be on Wednesday evenings, and is suitable for adult beginners and those with a little prior experience who would like to develop their skills further. Each weekly session will be from 6 - 8.30pm, and cover a different process each week. Fiona will demonstrate all the processes, and you will then be able to make pieces of your own design. Small class sizes so lots of hands - on support; all materials and tools provided; and all work fired for you.
During the course the main focus will be on different approaches to handbuilding; coil building, press moulding and slab construction. Beginners will learn the basics of construction and refining the pieces before decorating, and those with prior experience will be able to build on what they have learned previously, perhaps working on a bigger scale, developing new shapes, or refining forms further. There will also be the chance to learn the basics of wheelthrowing. Surface decoration will include applying coloured slips, simple monoprinting, stencilling and markmaking at the prefired stage, and glazing.
£215 per person, inclusive of materials, preparation and firings.
