Fiona Thompson - Cyan Clayworks

Material:
Earthenware
Technique:
Hand building
Firing:
Electric

I've been making handbuilt objects and vessels for the last 20 years for exhibition and commission. My practice also includes residencies, teaching, community art work, collaborative projects and writing. Recent work explores aspects of tourism and travel, and the natural history collection. I focus on handbuilt one off pieces with layers of printed and painted imagery. These are non functional.

I run the studio Cyan Clayworks, shared with Chris Donnelly, which we established in 2012. As well as making our own work, we run regular courses, one off workshops and offer indivual tuition. There is also project support and workspace/equipment hire available; for professional artists/designers, students and keen amateurs to work on individual projects. The studio is a community interest company.

The studio is open by appointment. To book courses or for more information please see the website or email .

Thursday morning course Posted on by Fiona Thompson

Thu, 7 Feb 2019, 10:30 –

Thu, 7 Mar 2019, 13:30

This five week course, run by Fiona, is suitable for beginners as an introduction to working creatively with clay, and also for those who would like a refresher. If you've been on a course before you are welcome to join the course to explore and develop your skills and ideas in more depth. It will run each Thursday morning from 10.30 til 1.30 for five weeks. We will cover different approaches to handbuilding including the traditional method of coil building, using press moulds, and throwing on the wheel. A variety of ways of creating surface decoration (using slips and glazes) will be covered; exploring texture, pattern, colour and markmaking at different stages. Each technique will be demonstrated at the start, and you will be able to work on projects of your own design. There are lots of books and journals here for inspiration which you are welcome to browse while you're here.

Small class sizes mean lots of hands on support for everyone. All materials and tools are provided, and your work will be fired for you. We would recommend wearing clothes that you don't mind getting messy, and there are aprons here to use. Our friendly working studio is a not-for-profit space. We have over twenty years experience of ceramics each; we make our own ceramic work as well as teaching at the studio, so you will be able to see our work in progress.
