Jen Smith - Jen Smith Ceramics
After graduating from the Glasgow School of Art in 2011 with a Master’s Degree in Sound for the Moving Image, Jen joined the Open Studio to at Glasgow's Fireworks Studios under Garnet McCulloch as a way to explore something tangible, tactile and visual. She took on her own studio space there in 2015 and began making professionally.
She has since completed an internship working with renowned ceramic artist Frances Priest and Atlas Arts on ‘Patterns of Flora’ which is installed at Raasay House, off the East Coast of Skye. Jen has also worked as a ceramics tutor with South Lanarkshire Council for the past two years teaching children, teen and adult courses. Jen has also had the privilege to run ceramics workshops as an artist facilitator for the Scottish Mental Health Arts Festival, Scottish Refugee Council and Terra Incognita Arts.
In 2017 Jen moved to Wasp’s South Block to set up her own studio where she produces functional, contemporary ceramics.
The surface of Jen’s pots are illustrated using intricate paper cut-out resists, sgraffito and mark making. The layering and texturing of colour and tone is integral to Jen’s work. Her illustrations are often botanical, drawing on her upbringing on the Yorkshire coast, to include open landscapes, seascapes, seaweed, and lichen.
The decision to specialise in this time-consuming surface design, while still prioritising functional ware, is a conscious step away from mass-produced table ware and instead prioritises giving time to an object in the hope that it will be used and valued for many years.
