SPA members - get involved in Mad Hatters Potting Tea Party at Edinburgh Fringe

8th-14th August 2015 - A Meet the Maker event - Venue 236

We have the exciting opportunity to hold a ceramic event at the Pottery Users Group (PUG) studio in the South Bridge Resource Centre on Infirmary Street in the heart of Edinburgh as part of the Fringe Festival.

The plan is to hold a 'Mad Hatters Potting Tea Party' where SPA members will demonstrate and teach drop-in workshops for the general public based around this 'Alice in Wonderland' theme.  It is the 150th Anniversary year for the book.

Participants will be able to create ceramic crockery, cakes, biscuits, hats, caterpillars, rabbits etc, allowing their imagination to run wild!  Both demonstration and participants work can be wheel thrown or hand built and will be displayed on the Tea Party table.  This will get longer and longer as the week goes by, and will be shared through social media. Demonstrators and helpers will change daily and will have the opportunity to publicise their work, classes and events.  The idea is that items not able to be finished the same day can be added onto by someone else the following day! These could be anything from Tea pots to giant cup cake or an etra big Humpty Dumty!  Truly a group effort!  This will be a making event and only limited work will be fired.

We have been lucky enough to secure funding from Craft Scotland for ‘Meet the Maker’ to enable us as part of their scheme to promote ceramics and bring ‘Makers‘ to the public.  We have funding of £100 per person for 3 makers per morning for the 7 days.  So if you are interested in taking part, we need to know by 15th June.  An application form can be downloaded here and should be sent to Moyra Stewart stewartmoyra@yahoo.co.uk

To meet Craft Scotlands criteria, you will need to:

  • be an SPA member
  • have a profile on Craft Scotland:
  • live in Scotland
  • be at the venue from 9.30-12.30 on the selected day

Setting up a profile on Craft Scotland is quite easy,  However if anyone does not want to register, they can still come and help on a voluntary basis (see form).

Makers will have to fund their own transport. A limited selection of clay, slips and materials will be provided.  Please advise if anyone lives in or near Edinburgh and can offer accommodation for the night to enable those further away to participate.

We would like to have inspirational examples of SPA members work relevant to the theme for display during the week.  This can be anything from teapots to rabbits as well as any examples of cakes and bisquits.  Please indicate on the form if you can supply anything.  We are not allowed to sell any items.  These can be delivered to Potfest, Culross, committee members or the PUG workshop.

We will be part of the Fringe Festival with information in their programme and online.  This will be a ticketed event (£5 and £4 consessions) and there will be two 1 hour sessions from 10-11 and 11.15 -12.15 with 25 people per session.  Tickets will be available through the Fringe office  0131 226 0000 and also through Greenside Events who are kindly helping publicise the event and will have other shows in the building.  We are very grateful to them, as well as PUG and South Bridge Resource Centre for letting us use their workshop free of charge.

This should be lots of fun, so I hope you will come and don’t forget to tell the world about it!
