Steph Liddle is a Ceramics Designer/Maker based in Dundee, Scotland. With an eye for colour and pattern, she draws on her background in Illustration to create contemporary, graphic ceramic jewellery and homewares. Focussing on minimal shapes, combined with bold patterns and a limited colour palette, she creates pieces which are easy to wear and live with. Working from her studio in a Victorian jute mill, Steph makes each piece by hand and aims to create simple and functional, yet beautiful, products to be cherished and used.
The core theme of Steph’s work is the idea of ‘home’ and ‘home comforts’, especially the role of food, and many of her minimal patterns are inspired by culinary staples. For example, the recurring dash and curve motifs she uses are inspired by rice and macaroni – classic comfort foods reduced to their most basic shapes! The result is a collection of objects which sit together and interact with each other, but are equally strong alone.
Designed with functionality in mind, the minimalistic nature of the objects allow the user to add their own narrative and explore how they use the objects. Each piece is hand-crafted using Parian porcelain clay before using underglaze to introduce hand-drawn pattern and illustration.

TILE // PINCH // SLAB // COIL - 4 Week Beginners Ceramic CoursePosted on by Steph Liddle
Curious about ceramics? Come join me for a 4 week taster course! Each week we'll explore a different handbuilding technique and play with clay to experiment with different shapes and forms. These classes can be attended as one-off classes or as a block of 4.
TILE // Saturday 3rd February 2018, 11am - 1.30pm
Starting with TILE, you'll learn how to make 2D tiles and coasters, and how to decorate them using decorating slips and surface decoration techniques, before moving onto 3D creations in PINCH, SLAB, and COIL.
PINCH // Saturday 10th February 2018, 11am - 1.30pm
Starting with ball of clay, in PINCH you'll learn how to poke and prod and pinch a lump of dirt until, as if by magic, you have something useable. Over the course of the class you'll have plenty of time to make a few small pinch pots which can be used as dipping bowls, for storing jewellery, or even as a tea bowl.
SLAB // Saturday 17th February, 11am - 1.30pm
Rolling pins at the ready! In SLAB you'll learn how to roll out slabs of clay which we'll then transform from 2D sheets into 3D wonders. Over the course of the class you'll learn how to roll out and cut even slabs of clay, before joining them together to create a pot which can be decorated using coloured slips and surface deoration techniques.
COIL // Saturday 24th February, 11am - 1.30pm
COIL fully embraces the satisfying repetition of a slightly monotonous task. We'll start by rolling out oodles of noodle shaped coils before stacking them up to create bowls, pots, and mugs. Over the course of the class you'll have plenty of time to make a number of small objects, or focus your attention on making one item.
These classes can be attended as one-off classes or as a block of 4 classes. Each class is £30.00 per week, or £100.00 for a 4 week bundle. This includes all tuition time, materials and firing/post-production costs. After the class your work will be fired and glazed by Steph, ready to collect or be posted out to you in a few weeks time.
Please email firstname.lastname@example.org if you'd like to book into all 4 classes for the reduced price.
