Valtos Studio is based in the Clyde coast village of Kilcreggan and is the ceramics practice of artist and maker Nigel Reid-Foster. The studio takes its name from Bhaltos, a small coastal village on the west coast of the Isle of Lewis, reflecting a longstanding connection with the landscapes and coastline of the Western Isles.
Valtos Studio creates individually made ceramic vessels shaped by the elemental forces of fire, sea and time. Nigel combines traditional making and firing techniques with an experimental approach to form and surface. Each piece is made individually, while the firing process introduces variations in colour, texture and character that cannot be completely predicted.
The coastal environment is a recurring influence, particularly the colours, textures and forms created by weathering, erosion and decay. The resulting vessels are intended to retain something of that character: individually made objects whose surfaces reflect both the maker's hand and the unpredictable effects of the firing process.
