Demonstration by David Wright - IN PERSON - at The Barony Centre, West Kilbride

The SPA are delighted to be able to welcome David Wright to our first in-person workshop in over 2 years on the weekend of 21/22 May 2022 at The Barony Centre, West Kilbride. This will take the format of 2 x one day workshops and so that we can enable as many as possible to attend, please only book for one day.

David will be making a rectangular bottle vase and an open bowl with stem, mainly using coils of clay, during his visit to the Barony Centre. He uses few tools and employs simple methods of making, gained over 40 years of working with clay.

David Wright - artist statement

I have been making pots for over 40 years. I hand-build all my work, mainly from coils of clay. I like the coarse texture and robust nature of hand-built work, that each pot is unique and not governed by the repetitive nature of using a potters wheel, or being confined by the cylinder.

I start by simply tearing off a piece of clay, using my hands and a few simple tools to explore where the clay may take me.

I use a few simple glazes, mainly from the ashes of wood and fire in a small wood fueled kiln using scrap timber, mainly broken pallets.

Over the years I have explored using waste materials to add to my work and perhaps I am best known for the wooden lidded boxes that I make.

Instructions

We are delighted that we can start to meet more safely in person again, even though it is likely that some Covid safety measures will still be applicable.
