About the Course:
We could not be more delighted to welcome the Founding Director of Oxford Kilns, Dr Robin Wilson to Hospitalfield.
In his role at the School of Archaeology at the University of Oxford, Wilson has pioneered wood fired kiln building as a sustainable firing method that brings people to work together. Through this work he has become an expert at building and firing anagama and other types of wood-fired ceramics kilns. Through his skills and experience as a teacher and communicator he succeeds in showing others how to build their own kilns through a practical experience of learning through doing.
This residential workshop will give enough experience of building a kiln that will enable participants to go on and build their own woodfired kiln.
The Fastfire kiln that will be made at Hospitalfield is a type particularly suited to highfired glazed stoneware. These kilns are cheap to build, relatively simple to fire, and are used extensively in the teaching and learning programmes at Oxford Kilns.
Robin Wilson has devised these workshops through both his interest in collaborative practices and his significant knowledge of ceramics. The course at Hosptialfield will comprise three days of intensive practice-based skill development led by Robin with Arbroath-based ceramicist Fran Marquis.
Hospitalfield will provide accommodation in the house and full board; warming vegetarian food that is always an important part of these sorts of highly sociable residential courses.
You will leave the welcoming setting of Hospitalfield as part of a team of potters with all you need to know to build a simple but effective wood-fired kiln.
