Thu 28 May 2026 6:00 PM - Thu 18 Jun 2026 8:30 PM

Held at at Cyan Clayworks in Leith, this course is suitable for beginners and those with prior experience who want to build on their skills. It's intended to give you the confidence to experiment more with the clay surface to create your own palette (no prior experience of drawing needed!). The focus will be on making simple forms by hand or on the wheel, as well as press moulded dishes and tiles, to give you objects on which to explore colour, composition, pattern and markmaking. We will introduce students to slip decoration: brushing, monoprinting and using stencils to mask off areas. We will also look at carving, scraffito, creating textures and other low-tech print processes that can be achieved without needing access to specialist print equipment. Over the four weeks we will also cover monoprinting with ceramic inks, using underglaze pencils, oxides and glazing. You will be able to experiment with a range of techniques and learn how to create richly decorated surfaces that enhance your forms, at different stages. With a simple selection of slips, glazes and small tools you can create lots of exciting surfaces, layered patterns, colours and textures.

£185 per person
