We are a self contained studio and social enterprise, run by Fiona Thompson and Chris Donnelly.
This five week course is suitable for beginners and those with prior experience who would like to build on their skills, and will include different approaches to handbuilding and wheelthrowing. Firstly, the traditional method of coil building which is ideal for making unique vessels or sculptures. Fiona, who mainly specialises in coil building, will take you through the different stages of making and refining your individual pieces over a few weeks. We will also be covering slab-building and using press moulds. There will be a big focus on surface decoration; Fiona and Chris will show you various ways to decorate your pieces using slips, mark making, and glazing.
Chris will take you through the basics of wheelthrowing: starting with the essentials of centering and hollowing out the clay (which Chris will prep for you) and move on to shaping your pot. For those who have thrown before, he can work with you to develop your skills and confidence on the wheel, making different forms, larger vessels and composite forms for example.
